And you can have marketing without branding. The stuff I sell doesn’t have any branding.
This bigger person in me should let this go, but what can I say, I’m a pedant!

For some reason, you seem to be not only in disagreement, but positively disparaging of the role of design and branding. I had a look at your unbranded site and frankly some of the things you have to say about design are, at best, misleading and in fact, simply not true. Particularly:

Don’t worry about the layout
The colours, fonts, images, borders, background, layout and everything else really don’t matter.

You might wish that to be so, but I am afraid there are many accredited, academic studies (I know, I read a whole load of them when I studied this very subject for my own thesis) – not opinion-based theories – that will firmly contradict that statement. Layout does matter. Where information is placed in the field of vision does matter. Whether it is text or image does matter. Typography does matter. People take all sort of emotional and cultural cues from typography. Not only from the design of the font itself, but how it is used. To dismiss years of academic research in one swathing sentence is more that a little surprising and from a designer’s perspective somewhat irksome.

I think you and the rest of us are never going to see eye-to-eye on the branding / marketing issue. However, I would just say that despite the assumption that none of us have spoken to Marketing people, I’m sure many of us have worked with directly with marketing departments over the years. In my experience (which may not be as broad as some of the others here), your understanding is not one I have ever heard from any of the marketing people I have had dealings with. I have worked with companies from full-service blue-chip-client design agencies with their own marketing departments, to international publishers and my experiences consistently differ from yours.

Hank is probably right though; we should stop this before it becomes too much of a bun-fight.

Hadn't ever looked at the website before. I'm a bit shocked by it if I'm being honest. It looks really outdated. But not here to criticise work not asked to be critiqued. Just following the flow of the conversation.

I'm a bit shocked by the website and it's content, and a few of the review sites are deadlinks, and some of the sites reportedly worked on have other design companies attached to them.
No problem with testemonials, but I can't really say I'd trust the website for a few factors, design, content, appear to be misleading reviews (despite the disclaimer at the top - just a few things that throw up red flags for me.

Not having a go - just an observation.

Those aren’t the money sites. The products I sell aren’t even listed on my own websites (because marketing). They are all listed in the Wordpress repository with zero branding. The second site was developed with help from a designer on this forum. It has a bounce rate under 20% so something must be working. The money site has a similar bounce rate, ranks well and gets me one decent lead every couple of days. I agree it doesn’t have much zing but it pays the bills. Maybe I’m just an outlier.

I have no idea what you're on about. Your own websites in your links are not very good.
But they work. They rank well and they bring in leads. Bounce is low, people don't return to Google. This one: https://bankcomparisonplugin.com/

is just the support site for this: https://wordpress.org/plugins/loan-comparison/

Earns me enough each month to pay my bills. Boring and bland - but it works. It uses the same theme as this one (which is the one designed by a member of this forum):

I'm not selling myself, it's just a demo site to showcase the theme. Hence, my argument that it has no branding. There is no 'me' in the design. People land on the site, download the themes and install it on their own sites. Doesn't need to do anything else.

What does that have to do with anything? That's not marketing - it's similar to typosquatting.
The sites look crap. That's all I'm saying.

Your marketing strategy is that Google ranks you and you get hits.

Anybody can do that. I just couldn't be arsed. And it's a bit dishonest.

Percentage based bounce rates mean absolutely nothing without context...... you could have a 20% bounce rate with only 10 visitors and at the same time you could have a 20% bounce rate with 1 million visitor, which site is better.....

You say about the tradesman theme... you know that's been designed with branding in mind right....

You're on about your things making you loads of money without any branding on a repository site... you do realise that the only reason the repository exists is because of the branding and subsequent marketing that's been done by wordpress. Pretty sure any of us on here could put our work into an existing marketplace, especially if it fulfils a niche area, and makes some cash from doing so, I know I could with my 3D work as there's plenty of online marketplaces dealing with it.

Yeah and as Hank says you can't say you're good at marketing when it's basically all down to how google ranks you

Personally I think your sites are doing exactly the same bad practice seo you complained about a little while ago but if you're happy doing that then so be it, personally I wouldn't be doing it as it's not the sort of image I'd want to give off for my business.

What bad practice SEO?

I agree is bounce isn’t a good signal but if they were as bad as you suggest people wouldn’t convert. But they do.
