If school is not an option your best bet would be to go to lynda.com and start watching craploads of tutorials to get yourself familiar with the adobe suite. Afterwords just make yourself a portfolio and go from there. Of course in this economy not sure if many employers would give any...

I recall hearing in prior posts about how GD grads commonly lack skills in knowing crops, bleeds and masking. I am looking from the employers out there for the most common/should know skills that grads need to know but commonly don't and frustrates the hell out of you.
