Never had this error before when opening a PDF, anyone else?

Yes, I think there's a compatibility issue from Acrobat DC back towards 9 - if the PDF was made with PDF compatiblity of 10 or above, then it might not open in Acrobat 9 or below.

Is that the default compatibility setting when exporting to PDF from Adobe software now?

I don't believe so - I think the defaul is 6.0 but I can check tomorrow
