What to charge a studio for a day of freelance?

Hi all,

I have been asked to do two days freelance for a studio in York - and they are asking me my day rates. For client work I charge £30 an hour, £210 a day. I want to create a good relationship with this studio as it could lead to permanent work, but I don't want to undervalue myself either. They are a small studio with not a great deal of money but they do brilliant creative work.

I was thinking around £130? Does this sound about right?

Thanks,
Mandy

Ultimately it' up to you, but £130 seems a bit too low to me. For studios I generally work at £200 per day, though this is often on the agreement that it will be 'bulk' work, so maybe 3–5 days minimum.

Remember that studios don't have to pay freelancers pensions, sick pay, holiday pay, maternity leave, etc etc. Paying a high daily rate is a lot cheaper in the long run than hiring someone full time. You can bet they'll be adding a mark-up to your time too.

Whatever rate you set now will decide what you charge them in future, so bare that in mind. You may find if you're too cheap they want you in more often, which can reduce the time you have available to work for you own clients at a higher rate.

No this does not sound about right... simple a that

You don't say where you're based so you could be travelling for a fair amount of time which will soon cut into your income.
You're freelancing for them not being employed by them so they will be aware of the current price range of a freelancer. If you can make £30 an hour normally why would you basically half your rate....
You're lowering your price in the hope of permanent work from them but your lower price sets a precedent for any future work or employment by them meaning you'll have a hard time getting a higher rate. It should be the other way, they get a 'better rate' if they're permanent

Studios typically charge up to 100 an hour. that's up to 800 a day.

I'd be going in a lot higher-end around 250.

Hi Mandy,

As the owner of an agency in York I probably know of / have worked with this compnay in the past. If you want to tell me who they are (via PM obviously) I'll probably be able to tell you a bit about them and the kind of money you should be charging.

If your rates are £30 ph/ / £210 a day, why lower them for studio work? You wouldn't lower the quality of your work, so why lower your worth? £210 is perfectly reasonable to charge a studio per day as a minimum, for all of the reasons above and then some...
