That was actually rather interesting. One of our first lectures on our design degree was the no no's of design, and our lecture said "NEVER EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE USE COMIC SANS!", we all laughed a lot, then the golden boy of our year used it in his final project and it is the only time i have ever seen it used effectively! Once in (apparently) 14 years!
A designers go to font is helvetica, for everyone else its comic sans - I think thats probably the reason its so hated, because its popular to the untrained/clueless - especially teachers, they love nothing more than an overhead projector loaded up with dodgy clipart accompanied with descriptions in comic sans
