Embossed and Debossed Business Cards

Hi Everybody

Thought I'd start a thread to share my interest in letterpress embossed and debossed business cards.

This can be somewhere to post photo's of these type of cards - I don't suppose the source of the photo matters - either a card you've come across yourself or from one of the card design websites like cardobserver or cardnerd etc. - and to discuss the options and limitations of this process.

I'll kick off with a very minimalist card from one of the above sites for Milk Design.

It couldn't be more simple - but the black foil with a blind DEBOSSED logo looks great to me.

I love it! Debossing and Embossing really interests me at the moment and I find myself numb to everything else as design using these techniques seem to really hit the spot at the moment! My knowledge of printing processes are so limited, is it a specialised technique? Is it hard to find printing companies that can deal with it well? And is it extortionate?

Looking forward to seeing more examples!

Hello Squevasquidge

I'm pleased to hear of your enthusiasm for the 'old techniques'.

In answer to your questions: yes it's specialised and yes it's quite hard to find - expensive compared to litho these days - but not extortionate :)

I do these cards mainly as a hobby as I'm semi-retired - I first got interested in this process 40 years ago as an apprentice compositor (typesetter) - our main business these days is litho print.

Here's one I did a couple of weeks ago. It's foiled onto G F Smith's Colorplan 540gsm card - duplexed (different colour card each side).

Best wishes - David

Terenzio contacted me recently for some cards for his architect business in Italy.

The black cards are DEBOSSED logo + clear gloss foil - the text is white foil.

The white cards are blind EMBOSSED logo - the text is black foil.

Both cards are G F Smith Colorplan 540gsm.

Hi everybody

Just thought I'd add a couple of the more interesting cards I've done recently.

This card was ordered from the island of Bora Bora, French Polynesia for a scuba diving business. The graphic is a White Tipped Shark - this card consists of blind debossing and black foil on Colorplan Pristine White 540gsm.

The above card is blind debossed plus copper and grey foils on Colorplan Duplexed Dark Grey/Pristine White 700gsm.

Yes simple designs look best for this process.

The most popular business cards I produce are:-

GOLD FOIL and blind embossed (debossed) on Colorplan extra thick card (540 and 700gsm).
