Learning the software alone won't make you a designer. Pick up some books on design theory and learn about typography, layout, hierarchy, etc. This is all stuff you'll be taught on your course though.
With regards to actual software, you'll need to learn the Adobe suite eventually as it's the industry standard, primarily Illustrator (for logos, icons, and vector graphics) and InDesign (for layouts and anything that requires typography). A bit of Photoshop and maybe even some After Effects skills will come in handy too. Expect to be working with pen and paper for the first few months though.
