Quick stuff, or 'off plan' type jobs go to GP Print in Peterborough - a local printer i've worked with for 5 or 6 years and is brilliant at getting stuff out the door quickly, and dealing with awkward or custom stuff. I have an annual run of 50 or so...
Your problem is trying to print on photo paper with a laser.
Glossy photo paper is for photos, not for invites. If you want to print photos, buy a dye-sub printer. If you want invites, buy a different card stock.
I recommend Pete at GP Print - 01733 340622 -excellent for short runs. If you can combine multiple jobs of different design but the same size and stock in one order that's a handy way to reduce your costs.

Now my level of print work is increasing the selection of suppliers i'm using for various jobs is widening.
How do people manage pricing/spec? Is it literally a case of online lookup at each supplier/phone quote or does anyone have a system/spreadsheet dump of prices?

Have you tried to get a business account? Its surprisingly easy. I set mine up at 17 with Lloyds, when i was 18 i moved it over to HSBC so it was free.
HSBC are excellent, go into a branch and say you'd like to open a business account and they'll get it all sorted.
Placed the order this morning, this is the final design and gloss highlight pattern i've gone for - thanks to Bigdave for his suggestion - i've gone with it, it had crossed my mind earlier in the project but i hadnt thought much more about it til then.
