Please critique my website

Hi James, I've had a quick look and overall I like the clean layout, but feel it could do with some colour in places to liven it up a bit, such as the "FIND OUT HOW MUTABLE LABS CAN HELP YOU" banner at the bottom. This is a call to action, so make it stand out. Similarly, the testimonial/s could do with some colour or excitement to draw attention to them. The person's name on a coloured background perhaps? You could even look into separating the sections with some colour, just to help break it up a bit.

I'd also mix up the typography a bit. Currently it's all very "samey" on the index page. Same weight, same style, same face. This leaves the whole page looking a little dull and I found myself struggling to read through the copy. I'd keep it short and snappy. If you feel you'd like to tell people more about yourself, stick it on an "About" page (these are generally considered to be the second place visitors to your site will go to, so it's worth having one to help sell yourself).

Finally, I'd remove the "coming soon" portfolio piece. If you don't have something to show, leave it out until you do. Never pad out your portfolio with filler content for the sake of it. Having a small selection of quality pieces is better than loads of average projects.

Ok but as for the overall design you do not think there is anything wrong with it?

Here is an example of another web development companies website ...

reInteractive | Results driven web sites, guaranteed | Sydney, Australia Ruby on Rails Developers

When I look at something like this, it seems to look far different. However I not sure whether I would class it as better or not what do you think?

If I changed my website to be more like ...

reInteractive | Results driven web sites, guaranteed | Sydney, Australia Ruby on Rails Developers

Do you think I would get more leads?

James.

I like the website for its clean look etc as well.

But I feel it is not quite up to the year 2014 expectations etc.

What do you think?

Is a whole redesign needed, be honest?

I need this website to convert into leads and currently it is not doing that with 200 uniques a month.

I would probably redesign from scratch to be honest. Not that there's anything drastically wrong with what you currently have, but as you said yourself, you're competing with others who have sites that are much more contemporary. Don't forget though, these are agencies who have the resources and man-power to devote to an impressive site. Saying that though, if you're relying on your site for the bulk of your clients, then yes, I'd say you need something that competes with "2014" sites.

If you're not a designer yourself, or feel you're not confident enough to tackle something like this, then perhaps look at working with someone who is. Also, sometimes it's best to hand over control to someone outside of your business who is able to look at you from a new perspective (this is a technique I often use with clients and it seems to work well).

That example of another web development companies website is just more contemporary in comparison to yours. That's not to say your website is bad, it's probably just a bit 'too clean' and not very exciting to look at.

Ok guys, that is great, keep the feedback coming.

I do not have huge sums of money to put into designing a new site. Although I do have the coding knowledge to do one myself although I do not have the graphics knowledge.

Maybe I can strike up a deal with a web designer to do it. He can have the design work and I can have the coding / software work.

Also with the other person on board we have a team and not just one person.

Buy doing the coding yourself you'll be saving yourself a massive percentage of the cost anyway. Feel free to get in touch with me, I'm rebranding officially soon to focus primarily on web/app design, so I'm always looking for developers to work with. I'm working on the branding/website at the moment.

It's an improvement, but still feels like it's a little way off. The home/index page feels a bit sparse and incomplete. This is the most important page on your site since it's what most of your visitors will see first, so it needs to make an impact and tell them what they need to know straight away. Currently it doesn't explain what you do. I'd try and condense your service into one sentence you can include at the top that will instantly tell people what it is you can do for them.

Ok thanks, will work on it a bit more.
