As a recent graduate in Graphic/Web Design i am, like many others, at a position where i'm qualified to work, however, lack experience to be given a job !! :icon_cursing:

Could anybody advise me on how to build a portfolio of work without having worked?

Also does anybody know of any companies recruiting fresh graduates, where i could gain some experience ?

Cheers !! :icon_thumbup:

I just keep getting brushed off, I have contacted places around me and they all just say they are
full. It's so stressful to know what you can do :icon_thumbdown:

ok sarah, for the moment forget the studios and agencies.

I'm just about to finish my 2nd year at uni, and I'm already freelancing because I took it upon myself to do free jobs till I had enough good work, references and referrals to start charging. I only had to do 4 or 5 and that was enough to get me started. Now I've got so much work I'm doing 16 hour days because the work hasn't stopped coming in! Now that I'm getting work I don't want to say no to it!

I'm sure that anyone with a bit of determination can do the same

Place local ads advertising "free graphic design from a recent graduate looking to extend portfolio"

or call local companies!

If they need it then it won't do them any harm to try a newbie, and if they ask what you want in return then just say a testimonial and some honest feedback.

good luck with everything, let us know how you get on

I did this one

Go to a site like Computer Arts - Home
and go learn some valuable tricks and skills

Also try to do their projects but with your own ideas, great to fill up your portfolio.

You can also ask a designer or printer to let you try their briefs and ask if they can crit it for you
(this you might have to do free of charge unfortunately)

Or go to a local Charity and do some Pro-Bono work for them , again great to fill the portfolio
(Plus this might give you word of mouth advertising which is invaluable)

Don't give up hope and work your backside off- you will succeed

Hi there. We are looking for somebody to work in house as our designer. Give us a call or email.

Thanks,

Hi! I know a company that helps graduates and junior designers get guaranteed voluntary work experience with design agencies in the UK. They set it up so that you can work for them at home and get your live briefs but the best bit is that you get them as an employer on your CV for as long as it takes for you to get permanent work.

Check them out on Creative Protege Ltd - they are on facebook too...
