2015 Macbook = sealed unit, no upgrading. It sucks,
Ah man, I hate that too...
I've been on and off looking at maybe getting a surface pro and I'm more interested in ram than I am overall cpu performance (that's what my desktop is for) but ram is soldered so forced into buying more expensive version (that's putting me off) just for more ram...

Oh how I miss the gold old days of being able to upgrade things like ram, I hate it being soldered onto the motherboard, same goes for the storage in some cases now too...

If just "building" a laptop was a thing, like it is with desktops, I'd totally be up for that some time. Sadly, it doesn't seem to be a thing.

Actually there is but it's nowhere near the level of a desktop sadly.

If I can build something stable, with a bucket full of RAM, decent processor and plenty of storage for less money than I'd spend in the shops, show me the way!

You can all of that apart from the 'cheaper' part... economies of scale unfortunately. You can go midway with some 'spec your own' laptops which are usually still more expensive than off the shelf ones sadly.

Well that seems to suggest that either laptop prices really haven't increased much in the last 10 years, or that laptop parts have priced themselves beyond the point of building your own being useful.

Prices haven't really changed much, if anything in some respect they've come down but you're getting a lot more performance per £ compared with 10 years ago... assuming you buy wisely and imo avoid apple laptops which are a bit overpriced these days.
