I just didn't see the point of that video.
we all know social media isn't a fad, it's startlingly obvious by the way our social behaviour has altered.
The sad thing is, if people need a video like that, to convince them that SM isn't a fad, then they've probably missed the boat.

Problem is there are many business's (and I have first hand experience of this) who don't know how powerful social media can be and are still using traditional marketing methods to get their services out there.

They honestly do think its a 'fad'

It is. Kind of. In that everyone's jumping on the bandwagon with little or no thought as to why. It's just another tool, along with radio, tv, press etc. Not saying it's not important, but it's not the be all and end all - sometimes a press ad or a piece of print, or beautifully shot TV campaign will be the right thing to do. Remember when the internet all kicked off and people said it was the end of print?

I'd question some of those figures too - where are they from? The idea that 80% of companies are using linkedin as their primary tool for finding new employees is just b*llocks.

About 3 years ago, I sat with an awful lot of marketing execs all scratching their heads saying "i know we need it, but I don't know why or what we're supposed to do with it." Sadly, it needs to be a meaningful application of the media for the public to buy into a brand, and most brands re falling on their arses- Impulse/ Bebo- terrible, McDonald's Spotify playlists, laughable. Does anyone have any good examples of brands using social media well? (seriously, I'm struggling!)

Dell make $3million directly through their twitter account and tweeting refurbished products forsale, only through that stream. There is another video I'll find it...

They very recently updated that figure to $6.5 million.

But Dell were already very strongly established by other means, so everyone had already heard of them. I would imagine it would be MUCH more difficult to build that kind of business starting with just social media.

Social Media is here to stay. Google as you all probably know has added Real Time search results very prominently in their search engine result listings. Google were basically catching up with Bing who launched twitter integrated results months ago. And now Yahoo have jumped on the bandwagon too.

All the Twitter haters need to realise that this isn't going away soon. Although a number of people are saying twitter results won't be as blended in 2010.

I still use Facebook. I've used it for over a year now and it's still a great social networking tool.

Just to reinforce the Dell argument. They would never have received $6.5m moolar if they weren't already a beast of a brand.

If you've got a unique product and it's intelligently promoted you WILL do well.

(pretty heavy stuff for my first post! :icon_biggrin: )
