WordPress MU Experience?

I've got involved in a project that I think WordPress MU would be ideal for. Perhaps with the addition of BuddyPress, perhaps not.

What I'd really like to find out is if their are any MU experts in the forum that have maybe developed plugins and custom templates :D

I'm a WP guru in general but have never spent a LOT of time with the MU version. Anyone out there ever set up a small/medium site?
 
I have set up MU before but felt the support was lacking, and the themes were not garunteed to work; therefore more work was involved for the styling of the layout etc.
But I did get there in the end! See the test - mi-ebook
