Laser Cutter - Cutting out negative spaces

Hi there, its been maybe 2-3 years since I last used a laser cutter and I need a bit of a refresher and some specific advice.

I am creating the wedding name cards for my friend's wedding, and I wanted the negative spaces of the lettering to be cut out, (or you could call it the background) so the card paper will take the shape of the letters rather than cut a hole through it, if that makes sense. How would I do that exactly? and how can I make sure when I go to get it laser cut will cut out the correct part? I've linked an example below of how I want it to look.

Help is much appreciated.

Thanks!
