How would I create an automatically numbered amount of text boxes?

I'm creating a calendar. Instead of manually inputting the dates for all 12 months, how would I tell InDesign to increment X by 1 where X begins at 1 in a selection of 31 boxes? Or, to put it another way, I want to lay out 31 boxes, link them together, press a button/apply a script/whatever and it automatically stick number 1 in box one, 2 in box two, etc up to 31. If I remove a box, 31 changes to 30. And so forth.

I know this is possible and I'm fairly sure it can be done with variables but I'm not sure of the right way to go about it. If you can help, it'd be appreciated.

Variables has got to be the way, failing trial and error I saw this template a while back Adobe - InDesign Templates you could update it to 2011.

I've seen that, wac but that script creates an entire calendar. I already have the calender design. I just need incremental numbers.
