Gradient question

Hello all,

I am wondering if someone can help please? I have an invitation card that I am looking to add a gradient to. The invite has a couple of different layers. The first is the background, the second is the double circle in the middle and the last is a religious symbol in the middle.

I have got to the stage where I can make everything turn to my gold gradient, but what is the best way to add a white eclipse behind the religious symbol to block out the leaves showing through, whilst maintaining the file as it is.

Did you sort this? Are you using Photoshop? Can you not simply add a white circle (or gradient fill, white to transparent) behind the symbol layer, as long as this is at the top of course?
You may have to do this first before re-applying your gold gradient, depending on how you applied that.
