Cold-calling potential clients: I hate myself.

The best form of advertisement in my opinion is ensuring that you're targeting the right type of clients, (i.e. those that have a substantial contact list, not the guy who's thinking about starting an ebay alternative on his own), providing an excellent service with follow up support and encouraging clients to spread positive feedback about your services to their contacts who may be looking for similar services.

No amount of advertising can compete against a friend or close business contact saying, "Nah, they're crap".
