In the biggest change in the stock image library sector for years. Getty Images are now offering Subscriptions on iStockphoto

Two levels of collections are available

Signature.jpg & Essentials.jpg

In addition, as an Independent Sales Executive for Getty Images (Subscription Specialist) I can offer you 4 extra Subscription Plans that will not be even available on the iStockphoto web site.

See the Powerpoint presentation at iStock-Subscriptions-Overview-UKI-Sales-MikeS for further details of what's available.

In my old job I quite often used stock imagery, but now it's once in a blue moon. What kind of subscription would you recommend for an infrequent user such as myself? The main reason I rarely use them is that I worry about copyright issues. For example, if I designed something for products to be sold, and wanted to use stock images, I know even though I have paid for the use of that image, me nor my client would have a right to sell that product with the stock image. If we wanted such right, I believe it would cost several hundreds of pounds for a limited amount of products to which the image(s) will appear on. At least that was my understanding from many years ago, things may have changed now. Stock images come in very handy from time to time, and saves you a lot of time too, but that is one of the main reasons I rarely use them.

For something that is time sensitive I'll use stock photos - as the event will be over within 1 year and never used again.

However, if it's an ongoing product image, I'll seek higher rights, or hire a photographer.

To be honest, I'd love to see stock imagery move towards the rights of digital reproduction, like online, email, websites, etc.

I find stock image sites handy for vector images such as icons or buttons where the purchase is more cost effective than the man hours it'd take to create a very similar end product in illustrator. That being said, I've had £15 sat on my istock account for months and months, with no prospect of it ever getting used.

Hi Carl, you are quite right regarding license. If you would like me to email you a User Friendly Version of the Licensing Terms in PDF format, pleas eemail me at [email protected]

If you are an infrequent user, I would recommned another Getty Images brand called Thinkstock. The advantage is that you can buy an Image Pack 5 for as little as £29.00

Thinkstock
Unlike the credits method of purchasing, where you pay more credits for larger file sizes, all file sizes are included in all of Thinkstock’s pricing plans.

Thinkstock has now has the following content:-

• 12 million Royalty Free iStockphoto photos & vectors
• 5.5 million Royalty Free images from Getty Images & Jupiter Images
• 500,000 Editorial images from Getty images

At the end of December, we added 500,000 Editorial Images from Getty images to Thinkstock. The Guide to the Editorial images on Thinkstock can be found at
A Guide To Using Editorial Images - Thinkstock

It’s worth noting that many RF images costing between £150 & £500 each on Getty Images are part of collections available on Thinkstock.

Thinkstock has exteneded license Image Packs, which although dearer than the standard ones, are not extensivlely so.

Here are the prices for Standard Image Packs
