How to impress university?

Im in my second year of collage and planning to go to uni doing graphic design next year. I want to start doing things that would look good in a personal statement or portfolio, my problem is i dont really know what would look good and what would be a waste of time.

what iv thought about already : doing free work for people and making a blog or something about it, making things for stock photo websites

any advice would be appreciated

Do what you enjoy doing.
If there's something you'd like to learn how to do, do that.

No point in doing something you don't enjoy to impress others.
Ultimately, do you want to be doing things you don't enjoy?

Find several thousand in unmarked notes, place in brown envelope and hide in portfolio that is shown to the interviewer

Honestly, show a diverse portfolio would be my advice, at the end of the day the tutors will know looking at your portfolio if you have potential etc.....
