How Can I Create This Illustration?

Hello there, I've been trying to create the vortex in the image right below with Illustrator for the last 3 days but I've gotten nowhere...



I've tried blends with replacing spine on a Fibonacci path, transforming a single circle using rotation and reflections, creating dotted brushes but nothing has come close to achieving that same result...

Any tips or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I think that's a great start!! Play around more
