I've left an editable area to accommodate a navigation bar but it won't allow me to change it. Is it just not possible or am I doing something wrong. Help/advise would be really appreciated.

It is probably trying to insert some code in a non-editable region to make it work. Personally I'd steer well clear of templates and use SSI (php) includes for site constants.
