Custom envelope design

Hi, I am a freelancer who is just starting out and am currently working on an invitation project. I need to design an envelope but am not sure where to start. I will be making it in illustrator but don’t know about the guidelines so that it is printed correctly and ok to send in post. Any suggestions would be a big help. Thanks :)

Get some quotes from envelope printers - they can guide you on the design/layout, as they will have templates already in stock. If you go for a completely custom envelope design, you will have to pay more for a new dieline to be made.

Also contact your post office and talk to someone in charge of this - so that the design doesn't mess up the postal system, as some mail is read by machine and needs text to be legible, not interfering with the scanners etc.

You also don't want to go over a certain size or weight as that would increase the posting costs.

You should work closely with your post office on the design, size and weight to maximise efficiency for postage.
