Sounds like you're after the live update button. Is everything else updated instantly as you make changes or only after you release the cursor? If so, it's almost definitely the live update switch.
Character animation, eh? This is the only guide you need: https://vimeo.com/41558459
I don't do much character animation, but the tutorials Tony posted look good. Another tool worth checking is DUIK: http://duduf.net/?page_id=151 it's a free plugin for AE and it's bloody brilliant. It makes IK...
You can sort of do this, but it'll always be more of a face-shaped mask than a full 3d model of a head.
There's an After Effects plugin called Pixel Cloud which separates every pixel in an image and displaces them in z-space using a depth matte. I've done it a couple of times, it's a bit of a...
It's bloody great isn't it. Those guys at Big Lazy Robot are killing it — consistantly brilliant photo-real CG! Check out their Keloid shorts (https://vimeo.com/33030265 and https://vimeo.com/75781782) if you haven't already seen them.

Although I'm technically freelance, the majority of my work is for The Telegraph. I work on both consumer-facing content for brand partners and business-facing promotional content for The Telegraph brand. When this one came up I was the natural choice to answer the brief, based on...
Apologies for being quiet of late, been a bit busy. Got some new work though innit: http://mattsimmondswork.com/motion/#brandfilm
Would love to hear comments. The consistant comment is that it's too long, which I tend to agree with. The trouble was getting the edited dialogue to fit together and...
On Wednesday I designed and animated a 30 second spot for use in O2 stores to promote The Telegraph's iPad app. 30 seconds in a day. It nearly killed me.
The only way I could do this was by reusing some assets and general creative direction I ma for something else I did a couple of weeks ago...
