    Creating 'fake' folio work

Why not do free design work for friends/people/business you know to get a portfoilo built up. Plus it may turn into paid work in the future. I.e. the brochure that you design for free for a local business, in 12 months when then want alterations you may be able to charge a little bit to do...

When is a proof not a proof?

It can be confusing for customers regarding bleed and general sizing of the cards, borders etc. I always send the customer a realistic looking proof so they are in no doubt to how the final product looks, complete with metallic silver foiling etc if that is required. Check out the examples here...

Loading AI files over network is slow

Hi, Yes there is a risk of data corruption and people overwriting the files. So far this has been fine though plus we have all machines backing up in realtime using crashplan should we ever need to restore a file or version of a file. Paul

Macbook Pro - to Retina or not

I should get myself down to an apple store to see a 15" retina MacBookPro for myself. I think it will be fine but would much prefer the bigger physical size at 17" I went from using a at MacPro with a 30" Apple display plus a 23" Apple display as a 2nd monitor at work to my 17" MacBookPro but...

Macbook Pro - to Retina or not

The solid state drives are marvellous. I would much prefer a decent amount of ram and a SSD over a faster CPU. I use a 2010 MacBookPro with a 512GB SSD drive and the difference a SSD makes over a mechanical drive is HUGE. My mac came with a 120 GB SSD and recently I upgraded it to a 512 GB one...

Loading AI files over network is slow

I have just remembered, the speed is perfect if I connect to the folder on the 'server' from my laptop but not if I connect to the drive? If that makes sense. I.e. I if I share a folder on the drive called 'artwork' and access files within, all is fine but if I connect to the root drive, i.e...

How long should a designer take on designing an artwork?

I have worked with lots of graphic designers over the last 20 years and what sets the great ones apart from the good ones are the ones that have a 6th sense. Some just seem to know exactly what a client is looking for with minimal input. I do bits of graphic design, nothing too wonderful and I...

Loading AI files over network is slow

Hi, I have an issue with Adobe Illustrator CS5 that has been bothering me for years. I access AI design files over a network. The files are stored on an external hard disk on an iMac and everyone accesses them over the network from their desktop or laptop. On my laptop however (a 2010...
