How long do design projects take you and how many do you do in a year?

Hi everyone,

I'm just wondering, how many design projects are you personally responsible for a year at your design agency? And roughly how long would you take to say for example, to brand something like a restaurant, with brochure, website design and some collateral?

I know there are a lot of variables in this question, but I am about to start my design career and want to know before I get into an agency what they would expect from me.. so if any of you with experience could give some rough numbers it would really help.

Thanks!

Last year alone I completed about 200 jobs in total.

Averaging about 1000 usable print files for the year.

I mainly deal with printed material though.

Each project is different - some branding can take 10 minutes, others can take 10 months.

The longest I worked on a branding project was close to a year and a half.

Branding really comes down to how decisive the client is - and the budget!

But you'll be expected to work efficiently and quickly for quick turnaround.

As you've said, there are too many variables to answer this question but as mentioned above, it largely comes down to budget and decisiveness by both the client and the designer. As the saying goes, 'Time is Money' so from their budget you need to work out what the max amount of time you should be spending on a project for it to be worth your while. Personally I mostly get small to medium sized jobs and like to consider myself to be a fairly quick and efficient designer, I don't usually spend more than a couple weeks on a project. But again, that depends on certain variables like how much other work I have got to do at the same time from other clients, amongst many other variables.

When it comes to working for an agency, all of that pretty much goes out the window as you will be expected to work as fast and efficiently as humanly possible. When you work for an agency, there are never enough hours in a day.

Same here, I tend to wok on projects that are a couple of days to a week in total, though this time can stretch on over a number of weeks (I work out a day to be 10 hours, so a four day job would be 40 hours, but could last two working weeks if you only work a few hours a day).

I've been freelancing in a studio recently, and ended up working until 1:00am to meet a deadline because the client was coming back with troublesome changes until the last minute. I would have told them where to get off, but it's not my business so I couldn't :p
