buying a second machine

I currently use a 2010 iMac 27" Running OSX Mavericks and work in CS6. The machine is fine and works great but I'm starting to find it difficult to be restricted to the one desk all the time so am considering getting a laptop as a second machine. If I get a macbook pro I can simply install CS6 (before anyone gets angry, the license allows you to do this) onto the new machine, BUT I'm not sure I have the budget for a mac as the 15 inch models start at £1,700. If I go for a windows machine I can't install my version of CS6 and would have to upgrade both machines to CC which would be an additional cost of about £45p/m for ever! But then again, a windows machine would be really handy for testing websites.

Any thoughts or advice greatly received.

I've got a 2008 20" iMac for sale if you're looking for a cheaper mac to get. I currently run CS4 on it but upgrading to a new iMac and CS6 for chrimbo. £300 for you! :D

I've not got space for a 2nd desktop machine. Ideally need a laptop so I can be reasonably mobile, but thanks thou. :)

@BigDave I will soon have a 15'' Sony Laptop for sale if you are after something cheap. It's a few years old 08/09 (I think). I can post up the spec later if you are interested?

I'm also thinking of getting a new (& my first) iMac but wasn't sure if I should wait until January for the sales? What iMac are you thinking of getting?

You could take a look at refurbished Macs.

Refurbished Mac - Buy Refurbished Mac Products - Apple Store (UK)

I think going the Cloud is the way forward - plus Adobe has stated it's never going to add support to InDesign CS6 for retina display, as accessing the HiDPI on the new Macs took some reengineering for CC.

It's £45 a month - if you're not earning that to cover the software there's something wrong.

For testing Websites you could get Bootcamp and install Windows on your Mac.

Hope that helps

Cheers for the replies guys.

With regard to not affording £45pm, it's not so much a case of not affording it, more that cs6 hasn't paid for itself yet and I'd like to get another year or so out of it before upgrading.

I've always thought the 13 inch MBP would be too small for design. Perhaps I should pop into my local reseller and have a play!?.

Thanks for the offer of the sony laptop. I might be interested

No problem. Here's some specs:

Sony Vaio Laptop
Windows Vista
Intel Core 2 duo processor 1.50GHz
2GB RAM
200GB Hard drive

It is still looks as good as new and it hasn't been heavily used at all. It was only bought and used for basic things like: checking email, word processing, surfing the net and watching movies. It hasn't got the highest specs compared to machines of today, but it should be just the thing for you if you're after a cheap laptop to test your websites on. Let me know, I am happy to help out a fellow GDF member :)
