How much is reasonable to charge...

... for one to one training. A contact, who was asking me to freelance, has now come back and is asking me to train her in Indesign. I don't mind (she wasn't paying a huge amount) and it may make her realise that she is better off putting work out rather than trying to do it herself! But what do you reckon I could charge for a day's training? Courses in London seem to be about £250 pd or can I charge more?! *
*I think we should bring back the 'interrobang' - although I feel it had a different name...

Obviously you can charge as much or as little as you wish, but I'd gage your fee based on how experienced you are with the software and with teaching. Since it is one on one training, you can easily charge more than the £250 - at least match it.

A few years back I had some one-on-one training in AutoCAD over two days. My company paid a guy to come in and sit with me at my desk, talking me through some basics of the software and just answering any questions i had. I didn't actually learn that much, and I think they paid his company about £1500 for the two days. This was going back nearly 10 years though.

I agree with charging whatever the hell you feel like. If you're teaching your client InDesign so she can avoid hiring a freelancer or outsourcing, then she should be expecting to pay a decent amount to avoid that. Like you say, it might actually make them realise they need the expertise of a designer.

Been using Indesign for over 10 years (and Quark and Pagemaker before that) and I am an ex-teacher... Does that put my charges up?

Training is consultancy so charge consultancy rates. These vary depending on sector/location but I'd probably be looking at around £500 a day.

For £250 or more for the day you had better be sure you are exceptional on Adobe. These "consultants" are likely to charge this amount or more as mentioned because they have a large track record, probably a well developed training program and tons of experience. This will be your first time selling this kind of training, do it for £20 an hour, ask if you can film it for future marketing purposes, develop your training course web site, register with freelancing sites like People Per Hour, set up a training event on Eventbright and then... In my humble opinion will anyone pay you £250 for a days training.

Well price gone into client and she's off on holiday! So watch this space (but don't hold your breath!)
