Printing Advice

Hi All,
I am wanting some perfume packaging printed in small volume for some proofs.
Can anyone advise on the following?

How is the gloss finish achieved on packaging?

Is it possible to achieve a professional looking finish myself? i.e. is there a printer i can buy (<£1000) to print my own?

If not does anyone know anywhere which will print for me in small run initially of around 20 copies? I can cut and glue myself so just need printing.

Many thanks.

I could get you a short run of vinyl labels printed, these are self-adhesive with a gloss finish. Failing that I could get you a short run printed on a glossy card. Anyway drop me a PM if you want some advice or help.

Hi, I want the same quality finish as you get on perfume and aftershave packaging so is that just printed on glossy card or is it printed on card then coated in something?

I would say it depends product to product but I imagine some would be laminated after print. And if you give me a bit more detail I can help you with that if required.

As spottypenguin says some packaging is laminated, some is varnished to achieve that high gloss finish. If you can find a local printer with a Xerox 1000 they are able to put down a high gloss finish. Alternatively I can produce digital prints on a 300gsm gloss card which might suffice for a proof. (Up to SRA3)

HI, I'm clueless about how it's achieved all I can do is offer examples but I basically have designs created in photoshop which I want printed to look professional and not a home craft look. So either laminated/gloss finish or otherwise a metalic or embossed finish. I Ideally would like some proofs printed with various options.

Hello stender,

My advice would be look at your budget and then work on the finishing options.
Any type of box packaging can be quite pricey, especially if you add the effects mentioned (excluding lamination - which is less pricey than metalic/embossed). You need to remember that the perfumes you see on the shelves are printed in their hundreds of thousands - which brings the cost per package down to a few pennies.

If you are just going to print a few then the cost per package will probably be a few pounds.

Other options you could look at is to try and source pre-printed (or white packaging) that you can put labels on - however, this probably won't look very nice on perfumes.

Printing it at home, as you mentioned, is one alternative - but unless it is cut perfectly - it may not look very nice.

Advice is to speak to print finishing companies (google them) and ask them to send you samples and price guides so that you can make an informed decision before you spend weeks trying to design something and realise that it costs a fortune to manufacturer.

I just need 4 or 5 trial copies printed initially but am struggling to find anyone to do it. I was recommended someone by a user on here and the guy who initially said he could do it has since just ignored my emails.

Can someone confirm printing on a gloss card stock will not give the desired effect?
And what is the process for a gloss black finish with white text?

Lastly anyone know a reliable source to do me a few samples. The box will print on just over A4 sheet, and I will cut it myself.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Lets take a step back.

The perfume that you intend to sell - is it expensive or cheap?
If expensive then your final packaging would have to be more plusher.
If not, you could possibly get away with gloss.

A gloss black finish with white text - I would recommend getting the package gloss laminated.

Maybe getting some SRA3 size sheets printed - which you can then trim yourself.
Is the design ready or do you still have to construct it?

Thanks

After the 4 or 5 trials, what production quantity do you envisage?

Have had a quote for 25. No sample print of my image but print sample of laminated finishes. Quantity after that depends but i'm unlikely to switch printer if the initial run are ok.

I contacted the guy you recommended and he's been a waste of time tbh. Send mails and hear nothing after initial replies.
