I cant remember the last time I took a letter to the post office and was allowed to use a 1st class stamp! The old girl in the PO does everything bar feeding the letter to a Rottweiler to check for chocking hazzards, to make sure it's too big, heavy, thick or valuable to go as a standard 1st class letter!

Ha ha, that is so spot on!

Be interesting to see if this increase in price improves the service, we don't get our post until 2pm most days!!

I doubt it will improve the service.... but more invoices will come by email. I have a couple of small clients who send their newsletters by post each month (only 150) - will they take the 39% increase on 2nd class? I have stocked up on stamps already but will buy a load more. Think how special letters will become!

It won't improve the service and it won't bring in any new business either. Either the Royal Mail are taking a 14p hit on every letter they currently deliver or they've got an eye on upping their returns to make them more attractive to the markets ahead of privatisation (which is kind of taking the piss at the current time). Either way, one has to assume that the only people still using postage are those who have no option, in which scenario they're able to charge whatever they like.

I'm sure I heard something about the Government taking over Royal Mail so it could be sold...or was I dreaming?

I posted a birthday card to my mum with a first class stamp and she had to go and pay extra at the delivery office to pick it up! Wasn't even a large card, just your average size. Unbelievable.
