New Member - Critique on previous work

Hi All,

I was wondering whether you would be willing to offer some critique on some of the work I have done, just so I can change stuff in the future if needed. I am 15 and new to Graphic Designing, so please don't be too harsh.

Here is an advert I made for my parents around 2/3 months ago. It an advert to go on another website (a hen party website I believe).
I had to use 'Gimp' for this, as I didn't have Photoshop or Illustrator back then.
I took all the photos myself, except for one (Photography is another interest of mine).

I have also made myself and my mate a desktop background when I was bored.
I understand that these won't to be everyones liking. I just made them to see what I could do.

Any critique or help would be appreciated!

Thanks and ATB

I think the poster could have so much more....

But... I love your other graphics and those renders from C4D are very good.

Keep up the good work.

When you say 'it could have so much more', could you please elaborate on this? Give some examples, etc

Thanks, I enjoyed doing them :)

I think your choice of font and font colours are not that great. Also "all caps" in the description is not needed.

The header could do with some work also.

Good effort for a 15 yea old with not a lot of experience. I've certainly seen a lot worse from university graduates. I'd just carry on what you're doing, play around with all the programmes in CS5 and you'll master them soon enough.

Ok, Thanks. I will bare that in mind if I have to do something similar again.

Thanks and ATB

Thanks for that, means a lot when someone says something like that! :)

I almost need to set myself a project or something, otherwise I seem to get nothing done, and I just don't really learn anything. I may have a search and see what I can attempt to make.

Thanks and ATB

Hi Jimbob - I agree with Arrivals in that you are really showing promise for someone who is only 15, and I love that you recognise that the desktop backgrounds you have done may not be to everyone's taste, that shows you're thinking about your audience, which is great! I think looking at some typographic design books may be of use to you, as typography is something people with little training often struggle with, and it's something that really needs to be mastered to be a good graphic designer.

With type, I find the younger folk such as yourself tend to go for the really 'cool' looking fonts, but quite often they are verging on the edge of tacky, and most should only ever be used very sparingly. Sometimes, less is more ;)

As you said you need a project or something it may well be worth you looking at the past briefs section on the Young Creative Networks website, they have a great variety of briefs on there and you may well find something you feel you could take on:
The Briefs - YCN Student Awards - Awards & Development - YCN

Please do come back and show us what else you have done! And good luck!
