Help with getting work

Hi guys i recentley graduated and i am after freelance work to keep myself alive. Anyone out there know of any websites where i can pitch for freelance jobs that are available. Everyone i find through gumtree is either voluntary, which i dont mind as it is building up a portfolio, or they are scams!!!

Cheers guys the fridge is looking empty!!:icon_crying:

Getting a job.

Hi there,

I help final year students in BA Graphics to get ready to find employment.

One observation I have is the way you refer to yourself as (i) and not I? I suggest you are making yourself small and not the professional you should be. I have discussed this use of lower case with HR Directors, and they inform
me that they usually 'bin' that level of communication. It is seen as lazy. I am not trying to sound offhand, but helpful if I can.

I have reached the level of Executive Creative Director, and really appreciate true business English in
communications and see the 'textspeak' quite often, but prefer someone who can express themselves as
professionals. Try it,you will see the responses more positive.

Good luck
John

Freelancer.co.uk and Peopleperhour.com

If you really have to, you could have a look at those two. But be prepared to bid low, very low.

Help

I have a page here on my blog where I explain how I market myself. It's been feeding me just fine for 9 years now so it does work :)

Truly Ace Graphic Design Blog

I would recommend against using websites where you pitch for work such as Elance and the like, you will struggle to win projects that pay more than peanuts, and my methods quite frankly work ten times better and will lead to a much higher yearly income.

Good luck!

Just had a read - thanks for posting the link. Very useful.

Anyone got any thoughts on Google AdWords? Worth it? Not worth it?

I think it's something where you have to be very particular when setting yourself up or you could very easily be chucking money away for nothing.

Hello

Hello there!
This post maybe a bit dated now but I thought I'd throw my bit in.

  • I'm not keen on the bidding websites ether as they seem like a waste of time.
  • Gumtree has sent some leads but none have ever been of great quality, still might be worth a try.
  • Word of mouth works well for me.
  • Socializing , "oh do you do that!?"
  • Talk to shops.
  • Have a business card.
  • Hand out flyers.
  • Stick up posters.
  • A website or blog (you'll be taken more seriously with a website).
  • Yell.com - register your skill in the area.
  • Advertising, creative, design, digital, media, new media and web jobs.. creative pool.co.uk

Network, Network, Network!

Word of mouth has resulted in some work for me. I had to turn a lot of more down because it's stuff I don't do or don't have the experience to do (web design and logo design mostly).

Telling everyone you meet and giving them a card is worthwhile. Who knows when that person will need your services or know someone that does? It's surprising how many people are seeking a designer but don't know how to approach one.

Word of mouth and customer referal are both significant chunks of new work.

Networking is also significant.

Adwords - 2% of website visits.

I am a photographer just branching out into graphic and web work - I aim to use networking and word of mouth as my main forms of marketing - will start small and see where it takes me!
