Cintiq L .............. ag.

It's been going on almost a year. Here's everything that hasn't fixed it:
Complete format and update of the Macbook including Mac OS
Fresh install of Photoshop
Updated Cintiq drivers

This isn't a "bro turn off your dual-brush settings" type of fix, as the cursor lags with the lasso tool and also just moving the cursor around the screen with nothing selected. I'm working in a psd smaller than A4, so that's not the issue either. Everything used to work until "updates" had to be installed and somewhere along the way it just broke down.
If anyone knows how to fix the issue I'd be very grateful, as the internet so far just says turn down brush settings (which are well optimised already, take it from me) or update drivers.

Fill me in a little more, ie connections, pc etc, and while I'm not really OS-X I can think about it from a windows perspective which might help too.

How did you do you do the fresh install of Photoshop? Adobe have a Cleaner Tool - https://helpx.adobe.com/ie/photoshop-elements/kb/elements-installation-error-CC-cleaner-tool.html

On the Mac have you got any other peripherals? I had issues like this before years ago where peripherals like external hard drives etc. contributed to Mac OS not working right.

Have you contacted Cintiq to see if they have a specific driver for you to try - I had this with Nvidea, my graphics card was brand new and it wasn't working with a game LA Noire (great game!) which I contacted Nvidea and they gave me a driver to install which wasn't on their list - it worked!

@Levi nothing but my Cintiq connected. Cursor is jittery, like it has a low frame rate. Then it will just freeze for a few seconds before finally doing all the motions I've made really quickly. Impossible to draw with basically. It happens in photoshop and just moving the mouse around the OS.

@hankscorpio fresh install was fresh. As in laptop completely wiped of the OS, salted earth so to speak. New install of the OS, updates, and new install of creative cloud. Nothing but the Cintiq plugged in and no I've not contacted Wacom because latest drivers should work or what's the point, haha.

I might have a look see if there's a driver that works best specifically for my 2015 Macbook though. Thanks guys.

It really does sound like a communication issue between the screen and the macbook to me but then I've seen threads on places lik reddit like
.

Not sure if OS-X has any way to play with the USB settings or not, could be signal not being sent fast enough, ie using usb1 instead of usb 2/3.

Do you have the laptop screen on as well? Could try without it being on if you don't already do this.

Is the screen refresh rate right for the external screen?

Does your macbook have 2 graphics cards (ie built in intel one and an amd one), if yes can you pick which gpu you use?

Connecting via a multi cable I assume, is it damaged/loose etc.

Does Photoshop have 'gpu acceleration' on? Could try turning it off, I've had lag in the past with that setting turned on for some stupid reason lol

@Levi ok so most of the stuff you might consider tweaking on PC isn't even on a Mac. That's not a PC v Mac statement, it's just a fact they're less tweakable.

No USB settings. In fact only two USB ports.
I use the laptop screen. And this has worked for years with the laptop screen on.
My Macbook has what it came with. Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB. Again, fine for years.
Cable seems fine.
Here are the performance settings in Photoshop:

Maybe I could turn some things down in there and see what effect it has.

Try turning off 30bit display, that's more for the 5K mac pro by the looks of it and that will be working the gpu pretty hard imo, not to mention you likely don't have a 30bit display in your macbok. OpenCL might be worth turning on as it should at the very least speed some other bits up as it will make use of the gpu and the cpu.

I've seen people fresh install Adobe Creative Cloud and apps on new systems - and the cleaner tool works as sometimes the installation doesn't take properly on new machines.
The cleaner tool works for this purpose as well, on freshly installed copies.

I know, weird!

But I do think Levi is on to something.

Yeah that was one of the suggestions in the reddit thread I linked to but some still didn't see any benefit from it.

The next step after turning off 30bit is to turn advanced down to normal etc and see if that helps but I'd like to think the iris card should manage advanced, although I'm a tad out of touch with built in gpu's these days.

By the reviews of the Iris 6100 and Cintiq they all say don't expect it to work with 4k.
Not sure what cintiq Jim's using to be honest.

I do know not all cintiqs are 4K but imo it 'should' manage 4K resolutions, especially if OS-X does it's usual scaling thing so you get 4pixels to 1pixel of resolution (it's basically just running at 1080p with upscaling). I wouldn't want to play high refresh rate games or anything but it 'should' be ok for photoshop.

Guys 4K isn't even a concern. It's a 2015 MacBook Pro (13.3-inch 2560x1600 screen, Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB graphics) and a Wacom Cintiq 13HD. Anything regarding 4K can be turned off.

So did anything suggested help? Did you see any changes etc

Measures Taken:
  • Decrease available History states to 25
  • Increase Cache to 6
  • Increase available Memory slightly
  • Switch Drawing Mode to Basic
  • Turn on OpenCL
  • Turn off 30 Bit Display
Result: Runs like a bloody dream! Thanks for the help everyone!

Cool, we got there in the end. In all honesty, never even thought about history states, but now I think about it that would be using a fair bit of memory which might end up being on the hard drive/ssd if it runs out of ram. That could slow it down but it didn't even register because I don't have that issue crop up due to the amount of ram I have for 3D etc.

I never had the issue with the same machine until the last year. Dunno what Apple or Adobe or Wacom updated but my Cintiq did not like it.

Maybe Wacom have taken note of Apple's approach to 'encouraging' new items to be bought.... ie make it slow down to make you think it's time for an update when all you need is a 'new battery' type of thing.

I wouldn't be shocked if somewhere along the line Adobe even adjusted the history state to 50 instead of 25, I can't remember mine ever being 50 if I think about it.

I'm sure the default used to be 20-30 or something.

So I've been using it for a good few days now with very little issue. The lag returns momentarily while a new YouTube video loads up in Chrome on autoplay, so I wonder if it's due to how graphics are processed or driven or whatnot.

My NEW issue is that whenever I go to an app other than Photoshop, then return to it, my brush has lost all pressure sensitivity until I use the eraser or some other tool, then the brush goes back to normal. WTF Adobe?

could be that, could be ram usage too... in all honesty 8gigs (I assume some is missing in screenshot because of intel gpu using it) isn't that high these days... maybe consider more when you get the chance (assuming you can upgrade it)

that's a weird one... that really does scream of wacom not being properly installed/detected by adobe though to me.

2015 Macbook = sealed unit, no upgrading. It sucks, I know. I got 16GB in my desktop iMac in 2013! But this was originally a work laptop, as in provided for free by my then-employer (and kept after I left), and it's too handy to switch out for the iMac, especially as I mostly work in the kitchen these days. Next computer purchase (when this one either gives up or becomes incompatible) is likely to be a Windows laptop.

Clean installs of everything, newest drivers installed onto a wiped machine (right down to reinstalling the OS), so it's definitely their fuck up, not mine.
