Job Advice!

Victory Over All

New Member
I have been searching for what seems like forever for work, and just recently managed to have an interview with a pretty big/awesome design studio that isn't based a million miles from me!

They've now asked me to come in on Monday morning and to work through the week to see how I do. I think this week will make a huge impact on their decision on whether they take me full-time, part-time or no-time...

Just wondering if anybody has any advice on making a good impression in a professional studio or if you have any experiences yourselves that might help?

Cheers!

Do what you say you'll do.
Listen carefully to everything.
Add value everywhere.

Capable, motivated and fit. That's what is being looked for (and fit does not mean attractive!).

I'd triple check everything before you hand anything in to be looked at, they will probably scrutinize everything you do in that first week! but if you make a good impression, are friendly and be yourself, you'll be on to a winner! Good luck!

Ask questions, take interest in what the other designers are doing. I think if you're hard working and enthusiastic it should pay off. If they are asking you to go in for a week to try you out, it sounds like you pretty much got it in the bag.

Perhaps the most important bit above actually. If you can't make a decent cuppa, you'll leave a bitter taste in their mouth.

try not to 'impress' with way out designs! keep things coporate and clean unless they ask you outherwise. I once made the mistake of flexing my creative muscles on a trial week and they didnt like the new boy trying to show off!..

Get involved. Just show enthusiasm and willing. My first job after uni was with a large new media design firm. I totally let it get to me and became a little overwhelmed and lost my confidence with getting involved etc after two months i was out.

Go above and beyond what yo think is expected, at the end of the day if they think you can add value to what they do you will most probably stay.

Good luck

So how did it go!?

Under promise - over deliver.

Under promise - over deliver.
Also ask when it's (the project) needed it for before they ask when you can do it for, it will help you manage your workload.

All the best,

D

Jobs are thin on the ground but don't forget this is also giving you the chance to see if you would be happy with them.
