I recently (ish) wrote a blog post on browser testing which you / others might find useful...
When not at my primary machine where I can use virtual machines via VMware on my Mac, I tend to use Adobe's new Browser Lab. It gives much quicker results than Browsershots (with a free account anyway).

Eventually we used vmware to set up testing environments on our machines as online tools were too slow or too expensive. I thought IE tester was useful for a while but it has flaky rendering when .htc files are used for various JavaScript fixes.
