Glad you got it sorted in the end.

If you upload them via FTP it will just show a directory of images which won't look good, you need a index.html page with some html code to display these images properly.

This is where my technical ignorance (although with this excercise I'm learning all the time) proves a problem. I didn't know anything about ftp, but the One help service advised me to load via ftp and not through their site design system.

I presumed that they sat somewhere and then I could load them into my new site as and when.

You don't really 'load' them into a site as such. You can either link to images or display them in a page through HTML. Boxx is correct that, if you upload them through ftp they will either sit in a folder (if you have created one) or in the root/public folder of your hosting space. They won't display on the web but would be accessible to anyone who know the correct web address.

I must admit I am not a big fan of 'site creators' but then I am a code snob so probably best to ignore me If you need help then you know where to ask.

I would love to create the site myself, but I have been trying to teach myself DreamWeaver (with the aid of online tutrials and a book) but I've not got very far.

I've always found, whether it be mechanics on a bike, or when I worked in studios, if someone could show me something, I could pick it up straight away.

That's the way I picked up Quark and Photoshop and if you'd got an idea how to use any Adobe programme, you could get to grips with InDesign.

But I've been buggering about with the site so long that I really just need to get it finished and then maybe learn a bit about coding for the next attempt.

Picture formats depend entirely on what the pictures are. jpgs for smooth tone images (like photos) and then pngs or gifs for graphics such as buttons etc. If they are jpegs then 60% and optimised for web (i.e. strip out all the meta data) is ideal but you can play with them until you get that compromise between speedy downloads and image quality. On the other point I do find it weird that people learning web design say 'I am learning Dreamweaver' rather than 'I am learning to build websites'. It's like saying 'I am learning the hammer, chisel and plane' rather than 'I am learning carpentry'.

Point is that DW is just a tool to improve efficiency. People often get sucked in to the idea of 'WYSIWYG' without fully understanding what it is the interface is doing in the background and that can easily be a recipe for disaster!

In truth you can build a website with the free Notepad you get with basic Windows (or Mac equivalent) and you'll get better results than someone who has spent hours trying to 'drag and drop' a website. Which is why I am iffy on the whole subject of 'so called' site builders. Letting a machine write your code is as crazy as letting a machine do your graphic design for you. They both need the human touch to work correctly.

If you want extra help then I Mod a forum at; Dreamweaver Club Forums - Powered by vBulletin but you'll always get the same response from the pros on there which is to get a good grasp of code (I mean HTML/CSS) before you do anything else.

Hope at least some of that helps (and please excuse the semi-rant).
