I've never understood what blogging websites give other than (often) free hosting space to publish articles
...Am I right in assuming this? Is there any SEO benefit for using wordpress/blogger?

My real question is, if I was going to put a blog on my website - would there be any benefit in integrating wordpress in to my website compared to just typing/coding a normal web page with my articles?

I wish I knew more about what is acceptable to be called a 'blog'

There is no SEO benefit in having a Google Blog in Blogger. Much better to use Wordpress or even create one with a new domain.
Be carefull about people being able to add links to comments thereby creating the possible devaluation of your site. Use links yourself to relevant pages to your main site pages . Always add original content even about your own products and services.

Blogs can help with SEO but one of the issues with 'posts' on a blog is by their nature they are new and so without page rank. So you have the problem of how do you get page rank for your posts.The answer to that is write something worth reading and people will link to it. You then have back links on your blog to your main site and hey presto you have imrpoved page rank on your main site.
