Any thoughts on Magento for the base for an ecommerce website? ...as opposed to getting something bespoke coded from scratch.
Is it any good?

You won't go far wrong with Magento if you can get it up and running. Installs can be a bitch though.
Your other option is Prestashop for something of similar quality and still open source.
Which is better out of Prestashop and Magento is almost as boring as the Mac vs PC row![]()

Thanks, yeah the developer specialises in it and said he can iron out all the problems with the Enterprise version although the cost is upward of £7k which makes me think I could get something bespoke done at this price...not that bespoke is better as I suppose if magento has 80% of the basic functions already in place then why pay to have these basic functions designed from scratch.

Magento is by far one of the best oput of the box ecommerce packages out there.
Especially as you can enter some test stock examples, export them to csv and thus execl, sort out all your stock and keywords offline and then re import them.. <- Huge
bespoke will not get you yearts and years of addones, templates, following etc etc
