Is it easy to do a basic website using just html but with some nice graphics work using illustrator as a background? All I want is a smart looking website to show off a portfoliio. I have dreamweaver but have not attempted it yet.

You can use Illustrator to create your graphics and slice things up as you would in Photoshop.

Use the Pixel preview mode so that you can see more accurately how it's going to turn out and check in the 'save for web' interface every now and then just to make sure.

You will probably have to work in Dreamweaver as well to create a reasonable result.
