Going to disagree (but then you knew I would). An average menu bar (unordered list of links) you'd click on anyway. If that drives a dropdown and you click a second link to get to the page you want is no different to clicking on a static link and then going deeper into the site with perhaps a sidebar menu. It is still two clicks to get to the page. No difference in usability for me.

Good to have the debate though. Means we are all considering the right kind of things even if we have different views. I'd imagine you'd win in a poll of users at the present time anyway because folks are used to hover.

Yeah a bit of a debate is always good. I don't think hover is always the way forward such as with an accordian menu, which to me makes more sense to click to activate although I have been a growing number of sites using hover for that. (Apple / Safari homepage for example).

I stand by the original drop down type menu should be hover every time though. If you hover over the menu to reveal the 2nd level choices and click then you have gone 2 levels deep into the site with a single click instead of 2 clicks which is what my previous point was about. Its so quick to easily hover over every drop down and quickly see what the site has to offer without even clicking once.

Although to go against my argument there is Computer Hardware - Scan.co.uk which uses a click to activate menu, but this might be because of the sheer number of options that it makes sense to have the extra window pop up on click rather than quickly disappear on roll-out. I think as you say each project should be planned and decided what is best
