Terminology - Elite / Platinum Design??

Ok, Slightly random one here.

I have had some designs for websites by professional graphic designers, but as such these cost more as of there time etc....

What I want to do is have it on my web design pages & portoflio pages that these are not the box standard designs by me or a normal graphic designer and as such will cost more. Its more so when talking can quote more for these designs.

I dont like the word Professional Designs, as it makes rest not seem professional.

So kinda thinking along line of Elite Design, Or Platinum Design. Its more just so people can see 2 levels etc.... So if they have the budget they can get more bang for there buck etc.....

Surely all your work should be of the same standard though. I hate when people offer this and then this! Work to a budget once you've heard it, I wouldn't say that 'if you have a lot we'll sell you this, if you don't we can palm you off with these.'

Plus I'd be wary of any site designed by a graphic designer—you'd ideally want a web designer…

Yeh I agree all work should be to same standard, but if budjet is not there for it then how can you give some one more work time for same cost? All I am syaing is a way to say why some of the designs of sites are like out of this world etc... I'm honest from start but want to list it so i could break down a quote, and I'm not taking mick, am saying like an extra 250-300 to allow for a few more days design work, which I dont see being un fair?

Kinda disagree, Have worked with Br3n on here and he classes him self as a graphic designer and he did Craig Sparkes :: Freestyle Kite Buggier well the graphics, I did teh code. And otehr ones are Flexifoil Kites, Power Kites, Traction Kites, Kitesurfing Kites - Leading Manufacturer Kites, Kite Landboard, Kite Buggy designed by a Graphic Designer not a web designer.

Unless your term of Web Designer is different to mine, I class a web designer as someone who uses designs and builds a website and can design one aswell, and then a developer as someone who develops and codes CMS, database work etc...

If someone can't afford your services then that's it, they can't afford you. You shouldn't reduce quality of work or say 'well for the likes of you we do x but if you were rich you can have y'. It seems pretty weird pricing a project before you've heard a budget.

Also Brendan is a multi-talented designer, and seems very accomplished in the web area—which would be his web deign skill at work. A graphic designer doesn't/can't design websites the same way a web designer can. End of.
And your view of designers/developers is slightly out, but not far…
A web designer is similar to a graphic designer but for the web.
A developer is someone like me, I can/do design sites but my real talent lies in build.
The people who do the CMSs etc are programmers

I can see the logic behind the idea, but maybe think of 'package' deals rather than lower quality but I would say fixed pricing is a better aspect, if they can't afford you then they're not serious about their work.
Having said that, I have a set price at which I charge (time based) for my CAD work and a slightly lower price for non CAD work. The reason for it is more to do with local competition rather than ability and to be honest I'm more CAD orientated in my work schedules anyway so it doesn't make too much of a difference.

Terminology bit. My view is a web designer can do html, javascript (or other), maybe flash and design the site etc, a developer can do html, scripts, deal with content management etc and usually either work with the graphics of someone or can do it themselves. So basically a developer can do everything a web designer can do and then add in the more specialist code bits.

eeek, always offer reduced functionality but never reduce quality to secure the job! thats business 101
If you are seen cut your prices the client will question why you couldn't just offer the lower price to start with! it devalues you, your skill set and ultimately your business.

If your offering premium design say over standard designs the only way you can justify the price in my honest opinion is if you make the premium a one time buy and that is no other client can also purchase that design. But to be truthful this has been done to death on the web... see

Oh and alternatively you could just offer something extra (besides "higher quality" design) and base the name upon that.
