Simple, simple eccomerce

does it exist?

Im looking for a simple eccomerce add on to an existing website, know templates to be designed, just something thats simple to be included in an existing website, and can be updated by the client?

Any ideas? AT ALL!?

Do you mean a payment solution, where they hook thier products up to a external shopping cart, or do you mean a content management system, where by your client can add products to a database and have it shown dynamically to any visitors?

I'm not sure what philjohns means either, but I do know that there should be a simple, simple e-commerce system, CMS or not, that's relatively cheap if not free.

it's getting on my nerves that even free e-commerce make you pay quite a bit if you have over a certain amount of products. £99 a year was the cheapest I found, and they took 5.2% of income.

The problem with e-commerce is the commerce bit.
Commerce by default means that money has to be made, these days any way, so having a totally free one is like the holy grail of e-commece systems, it therefore doesn't exist.

Yeah I see your point but at the same time, I wish Paypal would just give out a free cart and take a little more in percentage of each sale. They make millions and process billions as it is.

Don't Paypal offer a free cart, I'm pretty sure they do?

You set it up so you click a button and it adds the product to the free Paypal looking cart, problem is each product has to be manually set up.

The only fee is the percentage for each sale, I think.
They use to offer that, I thought they still did

im using paypal. they offer their own buttons to put items into their cart listed on their site. and that doesnt show a complex or particularly well built e-commerce site, it shows a few buttons have been configured on paypal's CMS and the designer has got off work 12 years earlier than he should've!

And they take 3.4%, whereas google checkout takes 1.6% i think, but google checkout means you have to invest in an external cart.

Understood I didnt make my self clear enough but in Jazays post....

He hit it pretty much spot on!

Im looking for a simple system, like that of what paypal offer but where the client can easily update the products and yet the design still be my design - not a template.

Thanks for every comment so far....

Well yeah I didn't say it would look pretty, I mean it is free.

Google checkout.
Does that shopping cart have to be a predefined one or could it be one you build yourself, something I'm currently looking into, so?

You could check out ~
Romancart,
Zen cart,
Aurrora cart

I'm pretty sure Zen and Aurrora are template based CMS/E-commerce systems TBH.

Romancart on the other hand may be worth checking out, my brother-in-law uses it, not sure of the details but he doesn't have a DB, so?

From what I've found, you can edit the applied carts and integrate them into Google checkout, it just comes at a price. My latest e-commerce client told me they wanted a free cart (they thought they knew best because they have a friend who is an IT specialist), and now criticises me for the finished design.

really? I've tried Roman Cart before and they had a price per year if you had over x amount of products. I had over 400 products in my last job.

Not sure if my comments posted themselves?
either way, i tried roman cart before and it failed on me for the fact if I had over x amount of products (i had 400, the limit was like 20 or something small), then you paid a fixed price per year.

google checkout provides 'free carts' as well, but the same problem as above.

Thanks philjohns by the way, i've been meaning to post a thread such as this for ages.

As I say, I don't know the details, but it would make sense TBH.

No what i was thinking is can you intergrate a custom shopping cart, that I build, with Google check out, or is the list pretty tight on who you can chose?

Roman cart looks ok...but its not what I want. Thanks anyway though

I need something where I can design a site, then intergrate the eccomerce/cms and then have the client add new product pages, change prices etc.

It doesnt matter if its going to cost either!

More help....?

As for creating this thread - If someone can find me what I have been looking for for weeks/months! I will be forever in debt!

I cant be the only person/designer looking for this -theres got to be someone making some dough somewhere?!?!

I'm not entirely sure. I'm pretty sure that they said you could integrate your own, but I'm not so sure about the costs of that. Which is annoying.

This is why I want to get into creating a reliable source like PayPal with a GOOD shopping cart and a GOOD cms interface and finally, optional design choices (asp.net or whatever)

doubt I'll ever get round to that though!

How many products are you looking to sell though? Any over 25 and it's a monthly fee as far as I can tell.

To start with about 15-20 im guessing, the sites for a "close" client who are struck for cash but dont mind at all paying for the eccomerce service - Im doing my bit as friendly favour if you get where im coming (dont threat - I dont do work for free to "real"clients. They are a family member!".

Anyway, yeah, maybe 15 to start off wth gradually increasing, but by that stage it will be a case of haveing a full ecommerce system developed for the company so forget that!

Do you know of any existing solutions that might be available? even at a price?
