Recommend a new Laptop / Tablet 'hybrid'

Hi everyone,

With my birthday coming up on Independence Day (you know the day special people are born on :D) I was thinking of treating myself to my first ever laptop. That's right, I have never bought a laptop before. The laptop I currently have is about a decade old and was a 'hand-me-down.' It is Windows Vista... & is gradually dying, so yeah....

To narrow down any recommendations, I fancy one of those laptop/tablet hybrids as I like to call them. I don't know the technical term or if they have an official name, but it is one of those laptops that had a detachable touch screen that can effectively be used as a tablet if I am correct?

Another important factor to consider is this 'Laplet' (see what I did there ;)) is not for work purposes, it is a new toy that I would like to use to do non work related stuff, like surf the web and read the sports news, watch Netflix, download iTunes tv shows / movies etc etc. So I don't need anything high spec. To be honest, anything will be 10x better than the laptop I currently own.

I bought an expensive Mac for work a couple of years ago, now I would like to be a cheapskate and get the best bargain possible.

Any recommendations would be highly appreciated.

Thank you (y)

@Levi I was just thinking of random examples of what I could use the Laplet for, I don't actually use iTunes at all, I use Spotify :)

I would like to go for a Windows OS as I am trying to be a cheapskate with this purchase.

Well twinny! We seem to share the same birthday! What amazing people we are!

What's your budget? I often recommend computers for clients. Not only am I their designer/it/web/electrician/mobile expert I also do their personal shopping ...

Nice one!

Don't have a budget as such, I just want something as cheap as possible; so far what I have found has been around £200 region. I'm guessing I have limited options, as I doubt their are many of these laptop-tablet hybrids to choose from?

But I am really not fussy, just I have no need for anything high spec and fancy, I have my Mac for that :). If I can spend under £200 that would be great!

well that would limit you to the atom based 10 inch 2 in 1's with 2gb ram and 32-64gb built in storage on windows 10.

My mum has a HP one and it's more than capable for web browsing, media playback and I would guess spotify etc. You can get similar for around 150-170 if not a little less at the moment.

edit: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/bac...d-2-1-laptop-tablet-w-1-year-warranty-2467062 something like this although it does not come or support a stylus iirc

Do any of these type of 2 in 1 laplets come with an ethernet connection port? As that may be a deal breaker for me, as we all know a cable connection rules over wireless. I'll only want to use wireless when I am using it as a tablet...

I'll be happy to pay over £200 if needs be...

very few laptops come with ethernet these days...just grab a usb dongle as well if you must go wired, although you shouldn't need to unless you have wireless connection issues at home etc.

Have you got any existing software you need to run on it and or font packs? Also what is it you need it to do? Will you use it fro gaming, animation, 3-d rendering, simple browsing, streaming, social networking, coding....?

We bought a chromebook for our daughter : https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01AWHN3AY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
the requirement was high portability (light and small) with an incredible battery life. And she use all the google and Ondrive services, like slides/powerpoint/ word/documents etc...

I think it heavily depends what it is you want fro your machine.

You haven't read my OP have you @ash? lol

The performance of an atom powered asus I mentioned is going to be pretty similar to that, well it compares well with my old x2 4200+ and I haven't seen no major issues with the HP my mum's got. The pcspecialist one Hank suggested is basically the 'kiddy laptop' for schools from intel and apart from the ethernet port it's no different to the asus one I suggested except in the case design, the other list of ones has a RT model in it which is a big NO as it's no longer supported and the other's run android or are more expensive than my asus suggestion earlier while being no better.

lol, I have, sadly not thoroughly :( Hay-fever makes me really fluffy headed. But the asus comes in a convertible model. Still, does gaming come under fun?

Ah god tell me about it, I'm just getting over a hay-fever attack! The older I get the worst my symptoms seem to develop; soon I won't be able to go outside!

Thank you, can you please send me a link to the convertible model? I don't know much about the Chrome OS tbh...

So far @Levi is in the lead! I haven't found anything better thus far myself, for more money too!

Have you got a link to your mum's HP? Any other recommendations in the £200-£250 region? If they aren't much better then obviously I wouldn't bother paying the extra £££s
