Rebuilding desktop

Before the Apple G5's there used to be a command shortcut to rebuild the desktop and clear all the rubbish that had accrued inside.

Is there a simple one available for a macbook or do i have to spend ages running disk utilities etc?

Hi Berry,

Just done a bit of searching around for you, and come up with this so far...

I think I read somewhere (the OS X Missing Manual by David Pogue, maybe) that OS X doesn't require you to rebuild the desktop. What's up, are you getting general slowdown and generic icons where the originals should be?

Mac OS X 10.0 and Later

In Mac OS X, rebuilding the Desktop file is only applicable to the Classic environment.
  • 1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple Menu.
    2. Click the Classic icon.
    3. Click the Advanced tab.
    4. Click Rebuild Desktop.

Looks like that's only available to Mac OS 9.0, Mac OS 8.6, Mac OS 8, Mac OS 8.1, Mac OS 8.5 - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2344

Not much help yet, what's the problem with it?

secure emptying the trash might help if you have a lot in there? finder / secure empty trash

I'm not a mac user but something must be eating the memory on your machine if its running slow. Do you have an application on there that checks memory usage at all?
