Yeah that's fine I've talked people through putting a computer together on the phone and over msn :)

AMD really are easy though, just got to be gentle (they're still quite hardy though) with the pins on the cpu (intels got the pins on the motherboard) when you're handling it

Agreed, AMD are easy and their quad cores are amazing for the price! and a simple system for socket I.D unlike intel, which is cool

bout £500 will build you a monster machine rocking 8gig ram and 3ghz of quad core sexiness...

I'm always around if your stuck as well

:)

I actually had a thought about this last night when I was trying to fall asleep (yes I know). Greg have you ever considered a mild overclock on your cpu (c2d are good for this anyways) if your motherboard can handle it.
I also thought about do you really need a quad core, photoshop struggles to make use of 2 cores in my experience so 4 is wasted. Might be better to go fast dual core so you may be able to do a simple cpu replacement.

If you can can you give us motherboard and cpu (cpu-z should do this) details we might be able to give you a cheaper upgrade route :) Overclocking isn't that dangerous as long as you don't go stupid, I've got my rigs overclocked by 7.5% (=400+mhz over stock) without any adjustments to voltages or cooling (mine is in a small form factor case too) I could go higher but I want some head room in my temps as it can get toasty when rendering :)

I just bought a new work computer..

amd phenom 955 3.2ghz x 4 Asus
M4A785TD-M EVO Mobo
4gb ddr3 1800mhz ram

I cant wait for the bit's to arrive on monday!

All bits including case psu drives etc was £450

gonna be rapid!!!

I reckon a bit of O.C on that processor greg has would give a good result.
all depends on the mobo i spose

If you don't feel like building it yourself Greg I can highly recommend PC Specialist.

I bought a new rig from them a while back and I was really impressed with their service. You can select all the components yourself (and case+monitor) and they build the machine for you.

Their prices are great as well. I put together the same system through Alienware and it came to £600 more! I also looked up all the prices of the different components and they don't add on anything to the prices. You do have to wait a few weeks before they deliver however, but it was well worth the wait.

the guys who run that site are just stupid. seriously.

if you dont like a Mac, big ****ing wup. go buy a pc. dont make a website about it.

Where can I find out those details Levi?
Sorry not overly knowledgeable when it comes to the hardware side of PC's!

Just had a quick look and they look good Soren thanks for posting.

Cool thanks Charles

1866 MHz (3.5 x 533)
Intel Core 2 CPU 6300 @1.86GHz, 1862 MHz
Intel Core 2 CPU 6300 @1.86GHz, 1862 MHz

Motherboard ECS 945G-M3
Intel GTL+ 533MHz

Is that the right info?

From what I can see you can probably do some overclocking although maybe not the best option for you and upgrade to cpu's which are basically discontinued.

Buy a new rig and keep this one as a spare would be my recommendation now :)

yeh i agree not that much marginb for OCin and a new rig would be a good idea; as I said earlier £450 got me a high end-ish system that would be fine for all of your needs!
You could even go lower on the spec and keep it below £400!

I would format the hd on your current pc and run it as a server/backup pc

Cool thanks again for the advice guys, will be asking lots of questions about a self build once I have the funds spare :)

Thanks,
Greg
