New website creation tool that I made

Makemake.io

Hello all,

I am posting on this forum because I am looking for advice and feedback from the design community. I have recently launched a new online tool for creating animated websites online (https://makemake.io). It's sort of like a lightweight version of Flash but SEO friendly, built on open HTML5 technologies, and runs on all modern devices. We were on Product Hunt a couple of days ago and were favorably reviewed.

Makemake.io allows you to create and arrange content any way that you wish. Animate your images, text, and shapes from page to page and change their position, scale, transparency, color. Customize your animation’s path with a click and drag bezier tool or use a predefined animation path.

Examples of sites created using the tool can be viewed here:

We want to make this product something graphic designers can use to make really cool stuff on the web. We think that websits designs have gotten very square and conservative in the last few years and we want to liven things up a bit. We want to make it easy for people to explore new possibilities in the medium.

All suggestions and feedback are very welcome (even negative feedback). We especially appreciate feedback from veteran members. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Best,
Eric Lesch

I'm going to let this one stay, I think the poster needs some advice.

Honestly first impressions of those linked sites....the sites made are buggy, they've got a lot of little issues with the way animation etc is working, it's flashing (like the animation is reloading), the motion animation such as sliding across the screen isn't smooth. I couldn't tell you anymore because those bugs put me off viewing or even prevented me using the navigation.

Hi,

Thanks for your response.

I haven't seen the issues that you are reporting. I would really like to be able to track them down and fix them. Can you let me know what kind of device that you are using? Are you on a phone/tablet/laptop? What browser were you using?

Thanks!
Eric

Desktop, 1080p, windows 8. Browser is palemoon which is based off of firefox.

I haven't had issues with those type of animations (pure html5 animation or javascript based) on other sites so it's likely something about how you've done them which is causing the issues.

Hi Levi,

Thanks for the response and thanks for letting me know what browser you are using.

Unfortunately I'm only doing testing of desktop browsers to the big 5 right now (Firefox, IE, Opera, Chrome, and Safari). There are a ton of Firefox derivatives so it would be difficult to test and debug every one.

Anyway, thanks for looking at it!

Best,
Eric

so you're not supporting firefox esr either then? That's what palemoon is albeit with a different interface and palemoon is actually quite popular.

Like I said I've had no issue elsewhere so it's got to be something you've done to the coding.

I'm no web expert, but using Mac / OS Mavericks / Safari, the animation seems smooth. The only potential issue I'm wondering about is the text. I can't highlight it and it looks slightly pixellated on screen, is it an image? If so, it may not count as content looked at by Google for searches. I might be wrong there, maybe other members will know more?

Thanks for the feedback Jimlad.

To answer your concerns, the site is being rendered in HTML5 Canvas so the text is not selectable. There are workarounds for this issue (similar to https://projectnaptha.com) but it is not something I have implemented yet.

If you are on a high dpi screen, the text will be fuzzy. This is something that needs to be fixed. The fix for this is in the latest version of the canvas library that I'm using but again, I haven't implemented the solution yet.

Regarding SEO, I am following the Google AJAX SEO specification (https://developers.google.com/webmasters/ajax-crawling/docs/specification). Whenever a search engine looks at the site, the server sends them an alternate HTML version of the site. The search engine will parse and index that content.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Many thanks for taking a look at it!

Best,
Eric
