Maps and copyright

Does anyone know the definitive legal position on us designers drawing maps for clients, regarding copyright? I have this vague recollection that you can be stung by Ordnance Survey even if you just use one of theirs as reference to create a quite graphic/simplified version, but I may be wrong...

Any clues?

Hi lula.

I've done loads of graphic maps for clients over the years and never even thought about this. I wouldn't worry about it. Obviously if you copy a survey map exactly you could land in hot water, but you're not gonna do that.

Jim.

Thanks Jim! I'll carry on then I think. (There'd be too many of us to put in prison anyway.)

Can you imagine? "What you in for mate?" "Vectorization of an ordinace survey map. What about you?" "Font dealing".
