Logo design for older persons charity

Im working on a logo design for a charity that specialises in looking after older people in the UK called 'Positive Ageing in London'. They want people to see older people as a positive part of society and they want a logo to reflect this.
Its a challenge to depict something that represents age without it looking negative.
Can anyone else recommend any positive symbols/icons that I could base a logo/wordmark on, that relates to time, ageing, positivity, goodness, etc, Ill list my own ideas below and the logic behind each, but Id love some input from others on the forum incase Ive overlooked some possibilities:
Ideas for symbols:
- Tick (positivity)
- Plus sign '+' (positivity)
- Clock face (time)
- Smiley face using the two 'o's' from London as the eyes (positivity)
- Sand Timer with plenty of sand still to run (positive thinking)
- Thumbs Up symbol

What about going down the wisdom, knowledge and reliability paths? Perhaps that will give you more and interesting symbols to play with.

There's an artist I have to look up whose style you might get some inspiration from. Maybe two very simple characters smiling with the logotype?

Definitely play with bright colors if you have the ok to.

Thanks chaps, thats really helpful Sean, Ill do a bit of research into that now. And please do let me know Shauna when you find out the artist you have in mind.

Below are a few of my ideas quickly mocked up in illustrator, down the left hand side is a colour palette Ive been working with (which I selected myself based on other charity logos)

Quick question. Is this a British vs American English spelling difference? Ageing is spelled "aging" here.

They're not bad. I wonder if you might be able to put some kind of graphical twist on ageing, perhaps by subtly making part of it start crisply (new/baby) and the end a little wrinkly (old/oap) it might be a bad idea, but just a thought.
And yes, it's ageing here :p

Yeah thats how us Brits spell it, (although I did double check once you mentioned it!)
Thanks for the suggestion Sean, but Im trying to avoid any negative connotations such as wrinkles. I know its a fact of life but Im not sure if its something to be positive about!

I like the top-right one, but I think clocks are a big no-no for a old person's charity.

I'd be working on the bottom-right rectangular ones, they could work nicely. (Maybe you don't need to focus on age as much as you might think, and you can focus on the positivity instead)

Just regarding the + as a t, it's quite a bizarre coincidence actually, I was looking at a receipt that I found in my room yesterday and there were a load of logos on the back. Yup, look at that, I thought... one of them was called "Age Positive" with a + used for the t.

The forum layout has me baffled! Ideally I think this should all be in the C&C department, but the top half of this thread should be in the logo bit. However, I don't think we should dissect threads!

Damn iPBoard, we need a system that works!

Also, this might just be me, but my suggestion regarding colour would be to avoid that shade of green with white. My boyfriend works in the waste recycling industry so all I see when I look at those ones are recycling logos.

Oh my god, you're right Lee-Ann. It was floating around in my subconscious but now that you've brought it up I can see it!!
We're talking about logos Tony, it's fine in the logo category ;) However, when you want to post up some more developed versions of the logos and are asking for more feedback, it'd be great if you could do it with a new post in the critique section Dave, or I'll have to cut the thread in half and move. Aint nobody got time for dat!

Thanks for all the comments so far, the green issue is a great point, I havent changed it yet as Ill move on to colour choices at the next stage but below are a few quick concepts Ive got so far, as always, comments and feedback is encouraged!

Just noticed your comment Sean, sorry! Feel free to move this if needs be.

The colour spectrum ones just says gay pride to me.
I was going to say number 6 was my favourite one amongst them. It's by far the most 'upbeat' which I guess is one of the main points of this?
None of the others are really working for me but I do feel number 6 has something going for it.
