I'm screwed... external drive erased

Something happened to my external drive, I don't know what, but it just reset or something. It's completely empty and renamed itself to LACIE again. I've tried to find a good application for restoring, but they either cost a ton of money (can't find any torrents for those apps :p), or they fail miserably. I've already used FileSalvage and Disk Warrior, and I'm looking for a free ticket for Data Rescue.

All I can remember was going through all my music files and organizing them. But I didn't delete anything. So thanks to iTunes I still have a big part of my music, but all the stuff I collected through time (PSDs, fonts, brushes, plugins, images, ...) are gone.

Please help me

Did you plug it into a different machine at all? OR have you had any power surges / blackouts?

oooh, read up about it.

were you backing up whilst updating OS X? if you were it can cause it to f off completely.

I didn't plug it into any other machine, there haven't been any blackouts and I didn't try to do a backup on it. And I didn't stick a fork in it before anyone asks :p

I'm a little scared of my external hard drive wiping out.
What do you reckon is the best way to back them up?

Just buying a bigger ex HD and copying it all over?

I think that's a good solution... of course I wasn't expecting my HD to fail any time soon though :p

Hi mate, i may be able to help you, i do a lot of work in data retrieval and have specialised software, the best in fact.

should have bought a good old fashioned internal doo-hickey. not that it helps now of course :p

Not sure how to remedy this situation, but for future references it mgiht be worth, every month or so, backing up your stuff onto DVD, and storing it away (so it doesnt get scratched or lost etc).
Or there might be away to pay for a server (similar to what you would use for a website) as they can be very reliable.

the company i work for uses an offsite backup system with a company in Scotland somewhere... they are very expensive :( and not always very useful.
