Hi guys, I'm Charlie and I'm a first year student at Northbrook College West Sussex studying Graphic Design and Illustration. I found this site on an old class mate's facebook page as he has the DF facebook page listed as his favourites. I'm 24 and speak German and Russian. I love Europe and the Middle East and thinking ahead for the future want to take my Graphic Design career there...maybe Italy and Lebanon once I have set myself up with lots of skills and practice behind me! I want to use languages and cultures in my work. I guess I joined DF really to share ideas, get some advice and tips and general inside knowledge about working as a designer as I only have my tutors' experience at present to guide me. I know there are many streams that flow alongside graphic design so would like to find my direction too ie. specialise into one or more areas. I've been to Uni already (studied German at Bristol) and so cannot afford to do another course in this country plus my other half awaits me in Germany. He is Ukrainian so its hard for him to come here and find work (visas etc.) I met him while I worked out there for 18 months and while he finishes his studies I'm doing mine here in the UK.We both finish in 2010 and then want to head off somewhere in Europe where there are jobs, possibly staying (me returning to) in Germany....its complicated lol! However, I'd love to get to know some of you on the forums and learn some new things!

    Have a creative week ahead!

    Charlie :D

    Welcome Charlie

I studied at the same college as you and graduated 4 years ago doing the exact same course, i'm also very good friends with one of the tutors who teaches there (Bill Strohacker). Who is your current tutor, if its your first year i'm guessing it is Mike Skinner?

Your in good hands, they helped me a lot, and still do.

    Have a good week!

    Hey Adam,

I actually joined this forum after seeing it mentioned on your facebook page! Mr Stone-Bignor House and LA school ring any bells! lol! Old class mates!
My tutors are Moyra Moody and Neil Donaghue. They are really good and are giving me loads of advice as they know I want to go straight into work rather than higher Ed.I don't know Mike Skinner or Bill Strohacker; they might be around the department for the higher Ed. Carole teaches our I.T. part ..i can't remember her surname. She is good but i always want to do to more than I am capable of atm! I see the effect in my head of how I want something to look but i'm still a long way off in skills and knowledge of actually producing it! lol! But im patient and it will come...its great learning though-soo much you can do with the Adobe CS3 Suite!

Jesus christ! Well it really is a small world then, that's insane!

How's things? Must be weird going back into education after a few years out of it!

Ahh yeah Moyra and Neil were my tutors only for a year though, when I went I was fast tracked as my portfolio was good so I skipped most of the ND. Mike Skinner is the head of the design department, he also teaches the 1st year of the HND, and Bill teaches 2nd year of the HND.
I'd recommend trying the HND after your ND, i didn't find the ND very useful at all (that maybe because I was already doing design work and because of the fast track) but the HND was as its catered to give you the chance to go straight into work after (which is what I done, where I work now i was given a placement as work experience in the 2nd HND year, and then I just never left here).

It's good that your on here though, as you can see the work people do on here etc, and my advice to you is start doing some work for your portfolio now, even if it means making up mock ups (using fake details to make a project) to bulk it out!

Hope its all going well, give me a shout if you need any advice/help

    Adam

Wicked. Can you add me to the list as well then. I referred 3 people. So 300£ for me! Wupee. I'm going on holidays soon, so they'll come in handy. Cheers Greg
You could actually survive from just referring people to DF. Just need to find about 13-14 people a month. Might be an idea if I lose my job. This really is the best forum ever!

Can I use that on an advert? Like they do for new films?

...and where should I post it to Soren?
Maybe best to PM me your address given the big numbers we're talking here, you wouldn't want me to get the wrong address! :p

Haha! You hereby have my permission to use it on an advert. I've sent you my account details so if you can just lodge the money today that'd be great. Thanks!
