Graphic Design noob needs help!

[TxHDesign]

So I'm relatively new to graphic design and need a bit of help on how to do 2 things. I am using Photoshop Elements 10..

First off, how do i add a glow to the edge of my canvas like the one here:

Second, how do i render the kind of faint lines across the image like here?

The first is just an inner glow with the colour set to black, blend mode set to normal and the opacity probably lowered a bit. You can also get a similar effect with a rounded gradient effect.

The second is easy to do with a custom pattern - photoshop tutorials scan lines

I'm not too familiar with Elements, but I would imagine possible to do both of these effects with it.
